One week countdown

Can you believe my marathon is only a week away? It seems like only a few days ago I was trying to decide in which marathon to participate. I had narrowed down by choices between two races: The International Niagara Falls Marathon and the Philadelphia Marathon. Both were equally appealing and I was drawn more towards Philadelphia. I had never been and what better place is there to run in the city of brotherly love? Also, my post marathon philly cheese steak sandwich would have been heaven. But I had to be sensible and think of our economic situation. Traveling to Philadelphia would be expensive and the drive would take us 8hrs each way. So, the next best choice was Niagara Falls. Over an hour away and we need only one nights accommodation, plus food.

I have to say that I’m looking forward to finishing this marathon. I really enjoyed my training until I injured my knee. I looked forward to my long runs on Saturday mornings and felt strong and confident after each one completed. My week day tempo or regular runs were also satisfying in the morning before the day’s humidity took over. I learned so much about what I can accomplish and felt great about myself. I was attempting to run a marathon! No one can take that away from me. Although the last portion of my training did not go according to plan because of my injury, I will still run and finish my marathon if I have to crawl across that line!

In Niagara Falls, Mark and I are staying at a bed and breakfast. This seemed like the best idea as it would be more “homey” and we have access to the kitchen any time we want. Also, I’ve never stayed in a bed and breakfast so I thought this seemed like the perfect opportunity. I might not be able to enjoy the wonderful breakfast that is provided by the owners of the  b & b, but once that marathon is complete I am off to IHOP for some waffles with strawberries and whip-cream. I will have a breakfast nonetheless.

Once Sunday approaches I’m sure I will be much more nervous but right now I’m feel calm and confident. I need to remember that I can do this and that I’m ready!

Running on empty

I know I’ve been neglecting my blog and this week hasn’t been exactly stellar on the motivation side of things either. Last Friday I ran 33km and today I could barely do 10km. I don’t know if I burned myself out or my hormones are kickin’ saying “That’s enough.” Regardless, it worries me for my 35km tomorrow. I’ve managed to stay relatively injury free despite little kinks and banged up toe nails (don’t worry, I won’t post any photos – they’ve gotten uglier). There is a little injury that is bugging me and it’s kinda painful when I run and walk. I don’t know what it’s called but it’s the ligament behind my knee, on the inside – you can really feel it when you bend your knees. Anyway, that injury has made it painful to run. Walking hasn’t made things easy either. I walk to and from work (2km each way) and then I walk all throughout my shift. In total it’s about 5hrs of walking. Not that I’m complaining but that doesn’t help the healing process of an injury. Anyway, this Friday will be spent icing that ligament in preparation for tomorrow’s run.

On a sad note, I fell off my bike yesterday. I’m ok, just a bit of road rash and a lot of hurt pride. I was at one of the busiest intersections in town and I couldn’t unclip my foot fast enough before I fell right over. I was waiting in the left turning lane so I’m sure 75% of the people in their vehicles witnessed the clumsy fall. I couldn’t face any of those drivers so I have no idea if they laughed at me or not. But I’m sure I made someone’s day.

I know it doesn’t look that bad but it’s in a pain-in-the-butt spot. My elbow also got it pretty good but it’s really hard to take a picture of your own elbow…

Earth Hour date and Sunday morning work out

Mark and I decided to go on a date Saturday afternoon that would continue on into Earth Hour. We went to the cinema to see The Hunger Games.  Both of us are big fans of the book so we were looking forward to seeing the movie. Mark is fairly critical of movies based off of novels. He did not like the Harry Potter movies so I wasn’t sure how he would like The Hunger Games movie. But it turns out, we both really liked the movie. Not much was omitted and most events from the movie were true to the book. So we were both satisfied and enjoyed the action, the directing, and all the small details that was the world of Panem.

For our Earth Hour date, we decided to have a fondue. This is our second year with this tradition. I have a candle powered fondue set which is perfect for 4-5 people. We are both chocolate fanatics but control our cravings most of the time. So last night was a perfect opportunity to eat all the chocolate we wanted. It was a nice quiet evening eating chocolate strawberries by candle light.

On to training now. I had a really good workout this morning. The weather is pretty yucky right now. It’s about zero with wet flurries changing to rain and back to flurries. So I really did not want to run in that; it is rather depressing. So I decided to go to the gym and run on the treadmill. I had a great run (compared to yesterday) but it was only for 4k. I did not want to run longer because my hamstring is still sore.

After a 30min, I went for a good swim. The pool was very busy but I felt motivated. I swam 200m and was happy so I said to myself: “Let’s see how much you can do until you tire yourself out. Let’s aim for atleast 300m.”  So I looked at the time and I was off. 300m and 6minutes later, my lungs were tired so I decided to stop. I was happy because my muscles were not tired. Now I just need to work on my anaerobics.

For this yucky spring afternoon, I am going to cuddle on the couch with my man and my cat, enjoy a nice cup of tea and watch an old film…we’ll see what I find on Netflix.
