Winter running and race schedule

I’ve finally made a plan for the next six weeks for the half marathon. The plan includes lots of running but also a mix of swimming, biking, and strength training. I need to gain a base aerobic capacity when I start training 100% for the half ironman.

Despite a cold snap, I have not dropped a run all week. Except for this morning. In earnest, I tried to get out there. Heck, I even ran around the block but it was just too much. I had my foot warmers, 4 layers of tops, 2 layers of pants, hat, mitts and a scarf but the wind was just too cold on my face. I should have warn a balaclava!

Anyway, I’m not letting that get me down. I did a little living room workout instead. I’m also glad to report that I feel like a runner again. I’m no longer struggling with/against myself when I run. My body is letting me run and I no longer feel stiff. That was a beautiful realization last night!

Mark and I sincerely miss Ottawa but, damn, living in the GTA is convenient! Everything is so close. It’s allowing me to participate in so many races this winter and spring!

March 3: Chilly Half Marathon

April 14: Georgetown 5k
April 21: Yonge St. 10k

May 18: Early Bird Triathlon (ok, this one is in Ottawa but Mark and I are doing this race again because we had so much fun last year and we’re using it as a vacation too!)

June 1: Moon in June 10k (a race at night – cool!)

July 7: Peterborough half – tri (half ironman, but not Ironman brand)

So that is one half of the year’s races. After  a busy few months, we’ll see how I feel about summer/fall races. I’ll be preparing for another marathon so I might just take it easy and concentrate of training.

Post Marathon Reflexion

I’ve had four days to recover and reflect. I’ve thought about my performance: what I could and should have done and also what I won’t do in the future. I’ve also thought about my nutrition, both before and during the run. What I’ve come to realize is that hindsight is always 20/20. I’ve done this with all my races and it’s hard to let go. I always say to myself: “I should have x, y,  and z.”  It normally results to “I should have ran faster” or “I shouldn’t have walked for that long.” Or whatever it may be, we all chastise ourselves for “shortcomings” during a race.

But I have to tell myself: “Hey, you were running a marathon! Don’t focus on what you should have done – focus what you have done! There is always next time.”

In regards to any future marathon, or long distance race, there are a few things that I will and will not do:

  1. I will never, if possible, run a long distance race alone. Running is incredibly lonely. Those hours on course get into your head and weigh down your motivation. I found I was a lot more motivated and kept a steady pace when I was running along side someone. However, it’s hard to guarantee that you will find a running buddy on course. So in the future, I will plan to participate in an event with a friend.
  2. I will pack more nutrition. I found that my 1 gel and 4 Powerbar gummies weren’t enough. I had Gatorade but my body wanted substance. Luckily there were jelly beans on course. A quick sugar fix that I might use in the future.
  3. I will always thank volunteers and spectators. Those people took the time to hand you water/Gatorade or anything else and cheer you on so I’m sure they appreciate a thank you. Of course most spectators are there to see a loved one or friend pass by, but they still chose to applaud, ring a cowbell or cheer you on nonetheless.
  4. I will not judge a runner by his/her size or age. Runners come in all shapes, sizes and ages. We’re all at the start line for the same reason so lets all be friends.
  5. I will have fun and enjoy the experience. Race day is your day. You have trained for months, made countless sacrifices, put your body through all kinds of strain and now is the time to enjoy the moment.
  6. I will pair travel and racing. There is no better way to enjoy  new scenery than to run through it. Participating in endurance events is a great way to see a new city or part of a country that you have always wanted.  You can run a race and stay the following few days to take in the sights and eat the local food.

In hindsight, there are certain things I wish I would have done during my marathon. But most of all, I’m happy that I accomplished the marathon distance. It is not so much an unattainable distance anymore. I know I can run it again and I most certainly will  in the next year. Stay tuned for that decision and training schedule in the next few weeks.

Weekend in Connecticut

Mark and I spent the weekend in Middlebury, Connecticut where Mark competed in the Quassy halfRev distance (70.3 miles). We left Ottawa Friday around noon and arrived in the early evening.  Race-kit pick up was first on our list:

Saturday morning was quite the treat.  I made my very own waffle! I poured the batter onto the waffle maker all by myself!

Topped with some maple syrup with a side of scrambled eggs.  All that was missing was fruit – which was dessert.

After breakfast, we drove to New Haven to visit Yale. I was really looking forward to it. I wanted to visit a few libraries. Unfortunately it was raining rather heavily and then turned into a mist so once we arrived we didn’t venture too far away from our car just in case it started to pour again. I was able to visit one library: The Bass Library.

Both Mark and I had something to look at: I was in awe of the library and Mark was in awe of the fact everything was made of oak.

Sunday morning was the start of the triathlon.  Mark was feeling good and was not overly jittery. He had an excellent time of 5hours and 5minutes and finished 3rd in his age group! I am so proud of him.  He won a bronze medal and a fuel belt.

When Mark received his “winnings” there was a break in the clouds, thankfully.  There was a bit of a weather hold up because it came down like cats and dogs and made the field soggy and muddy.

This was not fun to walk in but we couldn’t escape it.  I ruined 1 pair of really cute shoes that I’m a little sad about.

Our weekend was really great but tiring. We arrived home at 11:30 on Sunday for an early rise of Monday morning to start the work week.
